كان عام 1967م يوماً أسوداً في تاريخ العرب الحديث، وكان أيضاً نقطة تحول، في حياة نزار قباني حيث تحول إلى كتابة الشعر الوطني والسياسي، مع المحافظة على شعر الحب والهوى، إذ حمل المرأة في يد والوطن في اليد الأخرى.
والمتتبع لشعر نزار قباني في قصائده السياسية يجده يعمد إلى تصوير العرب وتاريخهم بجانبه السلبي، فيعتبر أن رجلا مثل الرئيس "جمال عبد الناصر" كان كثيرا على العرب، فهم لا يستحقونه، ولا يعرفون قيمته الحقيقية، فهو ظاهرة فريدة في تاريخهم الحديث كما يعتبره "أسطورة من الأساطير لا يعيد التاريخ مثله حيث يقول في رثائه: "أبا خالدٍ، ياقصيدة شعرٍ/ تقال، فينضر منها المداد/ إلى أين؟/ يا فارس الحلم تمضي/ وما الشوط حين تموت الجواد؟/ إلى أين؟/ كل الأساطير ماتت/ بموتك، وانتحرت شهرزاد".
في هذا الكتاب يجمع الأستاذ "محمد خليل الورداني" قصائد تنشر لأول مرة في (الحب والسياسة) اختار لها عنوان (القصائد الممنوعة لنزار قباني) قالها الشاعر نزار قباني في مناسبات مختلفة من تاريخه الحافل بالأدب والشعر. نذكر من عناوينها: "قصيدة التأشيرة"، "قصيدة الهرم الرابع"، "قصيدة بلقيس"، "ممنوعات كتاب الحب عام 1970" ... الخ.
