يعرض الكتاب بأسلوب ميسر الأفكار الأساسية في فيزياء البلازما سواء على أساس نموذج الوسط الناقل المتصل (الهيدروديناميك المغناطيسي) أو انطلاقاً من دراسة حركة جسيمات مشحونة منفصلة وتصادماتها (الحركية الفيزيائية). وعرضت اهتزازات البلازما واستقرارها وانضغاطها وتسارع البلازما وحصرها بحقول مغناطيسية بمثابة تطبيقات. وعلى العموم تم تركيز الانتباه على الناحية الكيفية للظواهر. ولم تدرج العلاقات الرياضية إلا في بعض الحالات المبسطة. تعود فكرة هذا الكتاب إلى الأكاديمي المعروف إيغور فاسيلفتش كورتشاتوف. فهو الذي اقترح على المؤلف وضع كتاب حول أسس فيزياء البلازما من دون رياضيات معقدة وبشكل متكامل. ولقد تبين أن هذا ليس بالمهمة السهلة.
