إن تحليل أسطورة أوديب في هذا الكتاب، يتصدّى للنظرة السائدة عن هذه الأسطورة، وتخصيصاً في التحليل النفسي. وهو يرى أن هذه النظرة اختزلت الأسطورة وشوّهتها، ويسعى، بدقةٍ وذكاء، إلى إعادة أوديب إلى حقيقة ما هو عليه: أوديب بلا "عقدة".
يتركز هذا التحليل على مسرحيتي سوفوكليس: أوديب الملك، وأوديب في كولون. وقد انطلق المؤلفان من وجهة نظر تاريخية، ليشرحا نصّاً أدبياً لساعر عاش في أثينا إبّان القرن الخامس ق.م. آخذين بالاعتبار حقائق ومفاهيم مألوفةً لدى أهل ذلك الزمن.
