هذه الرواية تدور أحداثها في خمسين عاما في مدينة الإسكندرية العالمية، في بدايات القرن العشرين؛ حيث ينشأ الصدام بين الحرب والتجارة، وبين السياسة والحب، وبين الاستعمارو الوطنية؛ مما ينتج عنه نتائج غير متوقعة، تتألف الرواية من العديد من الشخصيات التي تنتمي إلى جنسيات مختلفة. أندونيس خراميس الذي يعيش مع زوجته وولديه بالحي اليوناني الأرستقراطي بالإسكندرية، مقيدا بتقاليد الجالية اليونانية الصارمة، والذي يتمكن من خلال علاقة العمل التي تربطه باللبناني الغامض إلياس خوري من أن يوقع تعاقدا مع قيادة الجيش البريطاني بالشرق الأوسط، في اليوم الذي أعلن فيه قيام الحرب العالمية الأولى، والذي كان له فضل كبير في تحريره من التزاماته الأخلاقية تجاه أسرته، وبفضل وساطة صديقه خوري تصير له علاقة ناجحة مع الجميلة، ذات الأصول الفرنسية السويسرية، إيفيت شانتون.
