تعد رواية الخيال العلمي "البرمائي" أشهر عمل لألكسندر بيليايف على الإطلاق، ونشرت الرواية لأول مرة أجزاء على صفحات مجلة "فوكروج سفيتا" (حول العالم)، السوفيتية في عام 1928، وأصدرت دار نشر "زيمليا ي فابريكا" (الأرض والمصنع) الرواية في شكل كتاب في وقت لاحق من العام نفسه، تجري أحداث الرواية في الأرجنتين في مطلع القرن العشرين، وتسرد الرواية قصة شاب يطلق عليه أسم إختياندر وبإمكانه العيش على الأرض وفي المياه على حد سواء، وحدث هذا لأن طبيباً عبقرياً من كونه برمائياً، فإن إختياندر إنسان، وأحب فتاة جوتييريه من قبيلة الهنود الحمر.
وفي نهاية الرواية يسقط إختياندر ضحية لطمع النفس البشرية، حيث يسعى القبطان زوريتا لاستغلال قدراته الفائقة لصيد اللؤلؤ، وفي نهاية المطاف يقضي إختياندر فترات طويلة في البر، مما يخل بالتوازن في جسمه، ليتحول من إنسان - سمكة إلى سمكة، وينزل إلى المحيط إلى الأبد، ويمثل الدكتور سالفاتور أمام القضاء بتهمة تشويه الحيوانات والبشر وإدخال التعديلات على مخلوقات الله ويقضي عقوبة السجن لعدة سنوات.
