الكتاب من جمع وتحقيق ودراسة مصطفى عمران رابعة. ظلت شخصية الشيخ عبد السلام الأسمر، عصية على الباحثين لزمن طويل إذ طالما نظروا إليه كظاهرة خارقة في الحياة الثقافية في ليبيا، حجبت كل من عداه. فهو عند أكثرهم لم يكن صوفياً بالمعنى العلمي وإن كان شخصية شعبية بامتياز، ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليكشف عن حقيقة الشيخ الأسمر وعن دوره في انتقاد الأوضاع السياسية والاجتماعية السائدة آنذاك، وإدراكه ضرورة القيام بعمل ما يستهدف إصلاح هذه الأوضاع، والخروج بالمجتمع من المتاهات والخرافات التي خلفها الفراغ السياسي والتردي الإجتماعي. وهذه الرسائل التي تنشر لأول مرة- بعد أن أصبحت أصولها في حكم المفقود- جزء من مشروع كبير تناول زاوية الاسمر وإشعاعها الروحي والحضاري استغرق من جهد الباحث سنوات عدة. رامياًُ من ورائه إلى تصحيح النظرة الى الرجل اختلف حوله العلماء والفقهاء والباحثون واتهموا بالشعوذة والادعاء. واضعاً في مكانه الصحيح بين شيخيه أحمد زروق وعبد الواحد الدكالي، وفي مكانته كعالم صوفي فقيه رسم لأتباعه منهج حياة نجد معالمه في هذه الرسائل.
