يعرض هذا الكتاب رواية (الزمن الصعب) من الخيال العلمي، ويتحدث عن انفجار طائرة حربية يهبط طيارها فيلتقي بكهل يقوده إلى المدينة العلمية العربية المبنية تحت عشرات الأمتار في الصحراء، بإشراف علماء عرب متفوقين تجمعوا وتجاوزوا الظروف الصعبة باكتفاء ذاتي معاشي صناعي متطور في كافة المجالات والاختصاصات، ليحققوا طموحاتهم بصنع حضارة حديثة تعيد لأمتهم مجدها، ويخترعون أجهزة تعجز أجهزة التجسس وطائرات الاستطلاع عن كشفهم، ويصنعون زوبعة مغناطيسية توقع الطيارين ليضموهم إليهم بعد اختيارهم، حتى أصبح المرور الجوي فوقهم محرماً. يدرس العلماء تأثيرات كوكب الزهرة في قرد أرسلوه إليه، ثم يطلقون سفينة برواد لدراسته، تهبط القمر ثم تنحرف فينقذها من أخطار الشمس أشباح يقودونها إلى غرف واسعة فوق الكوكب الفوسفوري، الذي يضم فئات باختصاصات علمية شتى، لا تخضع لحكام وولايات، يتخاطبون بالموسيقا والرياضيات السماوية، ويتكاثرون بالحب والتعاون الجماعي، ويتوقعون الأحداث المقبلة بقوانين الاحتمالات الدقيقية، ويعملون للتطور العلمي باستخدام المدخرات التاريخية وغيرها، ويعرضون على طاقم السفينة معايشتهم في كوكبهم. يحنّ الطيار إلى أهله ووطنه، فيعود به خبير منهم بجهاز متطور، فيشاهد الأرض المدمرة بحرب ذرية بأسلحة فتاكة تحكمها نفوس وضيعة، ويبحث عن أهله بين الجثث المتراكمة، ويصحو من أحلام ذكرياته متمدداً على أنقاض بيته المهدم، ويعرض عليه العودة إلى الكوكب، فيرى زهرة تنمو متحدية ويرغب معايشتها، فيختفي الخبير وجهازه بسرعة البرق.
