يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوعات علم الأصوات اللغوية، مع التركيز على أصوات اللغة العربية. وفيه سبر الباحث غور الدراسات الصوتية القديمة؛ محللاً مضمونها، معتنياً بعد ذلك بعرضها بأسلوب يمكّن الباحث من استيعابها؛ كما وسبر غور الدراسات اللغوية الحديثة، ليتوصل إلى تفسير بعض الظواهر الصوتية التي نبّه عليها القدماء، ولكنهم لم يفسروها، كما وعنى بدراسة المظاهر العامة لعلم الأصوات، وأصوات اللغة العربية (المخارج والصفات)، التشكيل الصوتي، بالإضافة إلى إبرازه لأمثل الطرق لنطق الأصوات العربية، وهدفه مساعدة الدارس على التعرف على طبيعة كل صوت، وتوضيح كيفية إصداره، وكذا التحكم والسيطرة على جهاز النطق، ليتمكن من معرفة الأداء الصحيح لنطق لغتنا العربية، ويقي لسانه من الزلل والخطل في أدائها، كي لا يبعد عن سنن الفصحى وليتعلم النطق السليم الخالي من ارتضاخ لكنة أعجمية كما وضمنه بعض الموضوعات المناسبة للمرحلة التمهيدية في التخصص (الماجستير)، كما وراعى في تأليفه لهذا الكتاب أن يكون مناسباً لمنهج الطلبة المتخصصين في اللغة العربية.
