قسّم "علي حسون" كتابه هذا الذي يتحدث فيه عن تاريخ العثمانيون والبلقان إلى تسعة أبواب بدأها بإعطاء لمحة عن تاريخ البلقان في العصور الوسطى وعن الظروف التي هيئت للفتح العثماني وأسباب هذا الفتح. وأفرد جانباً واسعاً لفتح القسطنطينية ولحوافز ونتائج هذا الفخّ. كما أنه بحث في الإدارة العثمانية في البلقان ثم انتقل كي يتوسع في بحث أسباب التوقف العثماني وكيف بدأت على أثره الحركات المضادة والثورات الانفصالية تطلّ برأسها بعد دخول دور الانحطاط العثماني. ثم كيفية ظهور الدول البلقانية والجهود التآمرية التي قامت بها روسيا والغرب معاً لفصم عرى الدولة وسلخ الولايات العثمانية الواحدة تلو الأخرى. وتطرأ أخيراً لأحوال البلقان وعلاقاته مع الدولة العثمانية عندما كان نجمها يأفل. واستعرض بعض الحروب والصدامات العسكرية التي أدت في النهاية إلى سلخ البلقان وانهيار الدولة العثمانية نتيجة السياسة الأوروبية والروسية من جهة وانحطاط الدولة وتدهور الأوضاع الداخلية فيها من جهة أخرى.
