المؤرخ الإسلامي الشيخ أبو أسامة محمود بن شاكر شاكر، ودائماً ما يلحق اسمه بالسوري للتفريق بينه وبين محمود شاكر أبو فهر المصري، ولد في حرستا الشام ، شمال شرقي دمشق ، في شهر رمضان عام 1351هـ ، 1932م، تربَّى في بيتٍ اشتهر بالدين والعلم والكرم، التحق بالجامعة السورية (دمشق) قسم الجغرافيا ، ثم تخرج منها عام1956-1957م ، وحصل على شهادة الجغرافيا بأنواعها البشرية والطبيعية ، والإقليمية.

شغِفَ بدراسة علم التاريخ بفنونه ، ونهضَ بالتاريخ الإسلامي وبرزَ فيه ، وأصبحَ علمَاً من أعلام مؤرخيه ، وصنَّف فيه بطريقة مبتكرة ، وامتازَ بصياغة تاريخه في ماضيه وحاضره صياغةً دقيقةً من المنطلق الإسلامي مع عرض الأحداث وتحليلها ، وتصدَّى لردِّ شبهات وافتراءات المستشرقين وأتباعهم، كذلك اهتمَّ بدراسة علم الأنساب ، وبرعَ فيه، انتقل إلى المملكة العربية السعودية عام 1392هـ،1972م ، وتعاقد مع إدارة الكليات والمعاهد العلمية التي غَدت جامعة الإمام محمد بن سعود الإسلامية ، وعمل أستاذاً للجغرافيا والتاريخ الإسلامي في كلية العلوم الاجتماعية بالرياض والقصيم.
أعدَّ برنامجاً إذاعياً في إذاعة القرآن الكريم من المملكة العربية السعودية اسمه: ( جغرافية العالم الإسلامي)،اتَّصفَ بالتمسك بالسنة النبوية وبذل العلم والكرم والحلم والورع والتواضع الجمِّ والبُعد عن الشهرة والأضواء، وله أكثر من مائتي مصنَّف في التاريخ والفكر الإسلامي والجغرافيا.
