لم يطل وقوفى، لأن الشك ساورنى، حين لمحت أشخاصآ يتناثرون أمام البيت، لكن هيئتهم لا تبعث على الراحة، ابتعدت عن النافذة، وأطللت عينى وشفتهم، ليس أمامى إذن إلا أن أنادى عليها، وما لبثت ان ترددت خشية أن يسمعنى أولئك الواقفون فى الشارع، تقدمت نحو الطفل، وأنحنيت عليه، ثم حملته على كتفى، وفتحت باب الحجرة، وأخذت اتلفت باحثآ عنها، علنى ألمحها فجأة، لحظتئذ، وأتتنى رغبة عنيفة أن أمد يدى، وأعاود تلمس مفتاح الحياة المعدنى المختفى مرة أخرى، لم يكن أمامى إلا تلك الدرجات الحلزونية قليلة الضوء، على أن أقطعها حذرآ، فلم يكن هناك سور يمكننى الاستناد عليه، حتى أفضى بى السلم إلى الباب الحديدى الخارجى.
