يلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على قضايا النقد العربي قديمها وحديثها قضية الانتحال وقضية المعنى وقضية اللفظ وبناء القصيدة والسرقات الشعرية وقرنية أن سلام الى قضية الانتحال في الشعر العربي في المقدمة كتاب طبقات فحول الشعراء حيث يبين الأسباب التي أدت الى الانتحال لقبائل ضاع كثير من شعرها وقبائل كانت قليلة الشعر وأما القضية المعنى فقد أثار إلى الصحة والخطأ والصدق والكذب والوضوح والغموض والمعنى والأخلاق وهذا مقاييس مهمة عند النقاد والعرب و اما القضية اللفظ ليرى ان سنان الخفاجي ان يكون تأليف تلك الفظ من الحروف متباعدة ويكون لها في السمع وقفا حسنا ومزية على غيرها وتكون غير متوعرة وحشية ولا تكون الكلمة عامية ساقطة وأن نكون جارية على العرق ولا تكون الكلمة قد عبر بها عن أمر أخر يكره ذكره ويتناول في الباب الرابع بناء القصيدة المطلع وحسن التخلص ووحدة البيت ووحدة القصيدة فقد اهتم النقاد بمطلع القصيدة اهتماماً كبيراً وطالبوا الشعراء بأن يبذلو الجهد في إجادته وإتقانه وطبقوا على المطلع القاعدة البلاغية مطابقة الكلام لمقضي الحال وحدوداً وشروط للمطلع منها والفخامة والروعة والأدب وبعيداً عن التعقيد ونادراً انفرد الشاعر باختراعه ويكون خالياً من المأخذ النحوية وأما حسن التخلص وهو حسن الانتقال فالشاعر المجيد الذي يحسن الانتقال فيغادر موضوعه الأول الى الذي يليه دون خلل أو انقطاع ويجعل معانيه تنساب الى الموضوع الأخر انسياباً بحيث لا يشعر القارئ بالنقلة بل يجد نفسه في الموضوع جديد هو استمرار للأول وامتداد له وبين الموضوعين نماذج والتئام وانسجام .
