أثارت مسألة أصل اللغات اهتمام الباحثين والمفكرين منذ أقدم العصور وحتى اليوم، فالمقاربات والإشكالات التي أثارتها كثيرة ومتشعبة. وقد يكون هذا التشعب، وكذلك غموض الرؤية في صياغة إشكالية واحدة، هو مصدر الخطر الذي أقرته جمعية اللسانيات بباريس في المادة (2) من نظمها الأساسية الأولى سنة (1866م). لقد أفاض (سيلفان أورو) الذي يعد بحق من أهم الباحثين في فلسفة العلوم اللغوية، وتاريخ الفكر الإنساني والنظريات اللسانية – في التأريخ لهذا الخطر ودواعيه، وكذلك لما سبقه، وما تلاه. لقد أرفد كتابه هذا – بتقييم لمواقف اللسانيين المعاصرين الذين ما يزالون يعيدون تناول المسألة اليوم؛ فالوضعية العلمية قد تكون تغيرت منذ القرن التاسع عشر، بحيث لم يعد للخطر معنى. ولم يكن هذا الخطر سوى مسألة ظرفية، وحالة العلم المعاصر تتيح تجاوز العقبة، ولتجاوز ذلك لا بد من العودة إلى أصل اللغات، ولكن يبقى السؤال: ما هو دور اللغة باعتبارها واسمة للنوع البشري؛ ما هي أول لغة (أول لغة إنسانية) وضعها الإنسان، ما هو وضعها (هل هي طبيعية أو مواضعة)؟، ما هي علاقتها بالواقع (ما هي "حقيقة الأسماء"، أو الأثالة اليونانية)؟، ما هي دلالة تنوع اللغات؟.
جميع تلك التساؤلات وغيرها مما تثيرها اللغة الإنسانية سيجد القارىء أجوبة لها وتحليلاً ونقداً لافتاً في هذا الكتاب مما تم الإجماع عليه في أساطير الحضارات غير الكتابية، أو في النصوص المقدسة للأديان الكتابية ...
