لقد بسط الإسلام حينـاً من الدهر سلطانـه على رقعـة كبيرة من الأرض امتدت من حدود الصين إلى الهند إلى أقصى الأندلس إلى قلب أفريقيا، وأنشأ حضارة نبيلة متماسكة كاملة، ثم اخترق صليلُ صوته أسماعَ الشعوب التي لم تَدِن به، ودوَّى في رؤوسها صوتُ جلاله القوي؛ فكان من الطبيعي أن يُروِّع الساسة، ويبلبل أفكار العلمـاء والباحثين من خصومه في تلك الشعوب التي استشعرت الخطر على كيانهـا ومصيرها بإزاء تيار الإسلام الجارف، وبخاصة بعد فشل ’الحروب الصليبية‘ على صعيدَيها السياسي والعسكري؛ فدفع الغيظ الحانقين منهم إلى الاشتغال بنصوص هذا الدين ودراستها؛ للوقوف على ما يشتمل عليه من مبادئ ومعتقدات وأفكار وتكاليف، ولقد أيقنوا أن سر قوة المسلمين وعزتهم كامن في دينهم، فجعلوا يحملون معاولهم، ويهجمون بها على حصون الإسلام ليقوِّضوها، فيزلزلوا ثقة المسلمين بأنفسهم ودينهم، وذلك عن طريق ’الاستشراق‘، الذي كـان ـ ولا يزال ـ جزءاً لا يتجـزأ من قضيـة الصراع الحضاري بين العالم الإسلامي والعالم الغربي، والذي يمثل بحق الخلفية الفكرية لهذا الصراع. وتنبع أهمية هذا الموضوع من الأهمية الكبيرة والعناية الفائقة التي تحظى بها الدراسات الاستشراقية بصفة عامة، و’دائرة المعارف الإسلامية‘ الاستشراقية بصفة خاصة في العالم العربي والإسلامي من قِبَل أساتذة وعلماء فُتنوا بالمستشرقين ودراساتهم، الأمر الذي يتحتم معـه الوقوف على موضوعات تلك ’الدائرة‘ ونقدهـا؛ لتحصين العقل المسلم في مجال يرتبط أشد الارتباط بعقيدته وهويته الإسلامية. ولقد سلك المؤلف المناهج التالية في تأليف الكتاب: الأول: المنهج الاستردادي ’التاريخي‘ أو منهج التوسُّم، وهو المنهج الذي يعتمد على عملية استرداد ما كان في الماضي تبعاً لما تركه من آثار أيّاً كـان نوعها، وهو المنهج المستخدم في العلوم التاريخية والأخلاقية. الثاني: المنهج الوصفي، وهو المنهج الذي يستند إلى وصف الظواهر الطبيعية أو الاجتماعيـة كما هي بجمع الحقائق والمعلومات عنها، وهـو مكمِّل للمنهج الاستردادي التاريخي، الذي يصف الظواهر في تطورها الماضي، حتى يصل بها إلى الوقت الحاضر. الثالث: المنهج الجدلي النقدي، وهو منهج مكمِّل للمنهجين السابقين، يحدِّد منهج التناظر والتحاور في الجماعات، أو في المناقشات العلمية على اختلافها، ولا يمكن لهذا المنهج أن يأتي بثمار حقيقية إلا إذا أسعدته المناهج الأخرى. وقد اشتملت خطة الكتاب على مقدمة، وتمهيد، وثلاثة أبواب، وخاتمة.
