الكتاب من ترجمة عزيز مرمورة. يحلل هذا البحث القضايا الاقتصادية الحيوية الخمس التي يواجهها العالم العربي وهو يقف على عتبة الثمانينات، وهي: ضعف الإفادة من الفرصة المتاحة لتحويل المداخيل النفطية إلى رأس مال بشري ومادي منتج؛ تدهور وضع الأمن الغذائي؛ عجز أية دولة عربية عن الأخذ، منفردة، بخيار التصنيع المطلوب؛ اتساع الهوة الاجتماعية بين الأغنياء والفقراء؛ وصول إسرائيل إلى حجمها الاقتصادي غير الفعال وتوجهها، بالتالي، إمّا إلى توسيع حدود إنتاجها عن طريق الاحتلال العسكري (نموذج الضفة الغربية)، وإمّا عن طريق السلم (نموذج كامب ديفيد). ويخلص البحث إلى أن التحدي الأعظم الماثل أمام العرب هو استخدام الثروة العربية لتحقيق السيادة السياسية والرخاء الاقتصادي والمساواة الاجتماعية.
