تعتبر البنوك إحدى أهم الركائز التي يقوم عليها الاقتصاد الوطني في مختلف الدول، نتيجة للدور الكبير الذي تقوم به في تعبئة المدخرات من الجمهور ووضعها رهن إشارة المشروعات والاستثمارات الداخلية والخارجية للدولة، وبالتالي فإن تلقي الودائع ومنح الائتمان يشكل النشاط الرئيسي للبنوك، إلا أنه لا يشكل النشاط الوحيد لها، فبالموازاة مع ذلك تقوم البنوك بمجموعة أخرى من الوظائف الهدف منها توفير الوسائل الملائمة للتعامل في الحسابات حسب متطلبات كل فئة من فئات عملائها، فالتاجر يتوقع من بنكه تقديم خدمات تسهل له أعماله التجارية، بينما يبحث غير التاجر عن البنك الذي يوفر له ممارسة أعماله البنكية بأقل تكلفة وبدون تعقيد أو تأخير. وقد شهدت العقود الأخيرة تطورات تكنولوجية أحدثت تأثيرا كبيرا بطريقة أو بأخرى في جميع نواحي الحياة، وبالخصوص في قطاعات النشاط الاقتصادي المختلفة ومن بينها القطاع البنكي، حيث شرعت البنوك في الاستفادة من تلك التطورات لاستخدامها في تقديم الخدمات نظرا للفوائد المترتبة عنها، وقد أدى الانتشار الواسع الذي عرفته بعض الخدمات البنكية الناتجة عن التطور التكنولوجي كما هو شأن البطاقات البنكية، إلى تكوين قناعة لدى البنوك مفادها أن الاستفادة من التكنولوجيا الحديثة لتقديم الخدمة البنكية أمر لا غنى عنه في ظل المنافسة الشديدة التي يشهدها القطاع البنكي.
