في تلك الأيام نشرت إحدى الجرائد إحصائيات، واستبيانات كانت تبرهن على أن الجيل الجديد في الحي كان يرغب في الرحيل للحياة في مكان آخر. كان يُنظر بضيق نفسي إلى «بانيولي» على أنها مكان تعمّه المشاكل، والأزمات، وعلى رأسها أزمة البطالة والجريمة. أما بالنسبة إلى رجل مثلي قادم من قلب «نابولي» القديمة فـ«بانيولي» كانت أقرب إلى أن تكون قرية. لم تبد لي أبداً من قبل مختلفة، وبعيدة عن أن تكون مدينة مثل تلك اللحظة. بل إنها كانت بعيدة كل البعد عن أن تكون أي شيء، إنها شطر منعزل من الإنسانية، جزيرة دون راية. من ناحية أخرى، لم يكن ثمة داع للتعجب من هذا. كانت «بانيولي» قد توحّدت مع المصنع، فما لبث أن اختفى المصنع حتى تلاشت هي أيضاً، باتت عدماً. باتت بلا مستقبل. أيوجد شيء أكثر قدرة على التبخر من الأمل؟ لفترة طويلة كان الأمل يقطن بيت «بانيولي» بفضل المصنع ثم هجر فجأة المكان دون أن نعرف عنه شيئاً.
