تلتصق الحضارة الحديثة بشكل حميم بالنفط لتسيير آلاتها الجبارة وتطوير صناعاتها وزراعتها المعتمدة بشكل جوهري على النفط. ولكن بدأ تراكم الانبعاثات، وهي تعتبر مجازياً نفايات إحتراق مشتقات النفط، يؤثر على البيئة بشكل سلبي ويهدد بتغيرات مناخية خطيرة خصوصاً لجهة احترار الكوكب الأرضي وذلك بفعل تأثير الدفيئة الناتج خصوصاً عن تراكم ثاني أكسيد الكربون.
إذن وعلى مشارف القرن الواحد والعشرين تجد البشرية نفسها أمام أزمات سياسية واقتصادية وبيئية ومخاطر أمنية وحروب مدمرة لا تقل خطورة عن أي تغيرات جيولوجية كارثية. فالمزيد من استهلاك النفط سوف يؤدي من جهة أولى الى تسارع التهديدات على البيئة وعلى الحياة ذاتها بفعل التلوث ومن جهة ثانية الى تسارع نضوب هذا المصدر الثمين ما يؤدي الى زيادة احتدام الصراعات وخسارة هذا الخزين من مادة مفيدة في المجالات الصناعية والزراعية والتي لا تعوض ولا يحل مكانها أي مواد أخرى ضرورية لبقاء الجنس البشري في هذه الحقبة من تطوره النوعي والكمي.
يرى الكثير من النشطاء البيئيين وعلماء الطاقة أن أمام البشرية فقط بضعة عقود من السنين قبل وقوع الكارثة لإجراء التحول الضروري والجسيم من حضارة اقتصاد الوقود الأحفوري الى حضارة اقتصاد الهيدروجين ويتطلب ذلك إقصاء استعمال الوقود الأحفوري بجميع مشتقاته واستبداله بمصادر الطاقة البديلة المستدامة مع استعمال الهيدروجين كناقل للطاقة.
تستدعي هذه العملية تحولات كبيرة في الاقتصاد والسياسة والمجتمع. يساعد في ذلك الدخول في عصر المعلوماتية والأنترنت. إذ أنه بحسب هؤلاء العلماء فإن عصر شبكة الهيدروجين (الهيدرونت) قد بزغ وعلينا أن ننتظر التحولات العميقة لدى الجنس البشري على كل الصعد.
