هذا الكتاب قراءة وصفية تاريخية، تعيد سرد مشكلة جنوب السودان من عمق تاريخ العلاقات الشمالية الجنوبية، منذ الفتح التركي بل وما قبله، ويستند الكتاب في قراءته للمشكلة على مفهوم علم الاتصال الاجتماعي - وبالذات مفهوم انهيار الاتصال - كقاعدة نظرية للتحليل والتقييم. فالفرضية الأساسية التي تستند عليها القراءة، هي أن التراكم التاريخي الواقع من الصراع الاجتماعي والثقافي والسياسي، والتنافس على الموارد، والتنازع من أجل السيطرة على الأرض والناس، بين الجنوب والشمال؛ وغياب أسس التفاهم والتفاعل الاجتماعي والثقافي بين الجماعات الثقافية والعرقية المتباينة، لعقود من الزمان، أدى إلى واقع انهيار تام في الاتصال بين الجنوب بالشمال. وقد نتج عن ذلك الانهيار حالة أزمة، تطورت إلى صراع واضطراب اجتماعي وسياسي ساد الجنوب حتى هذا اليوم. استند الكتاب على قراءات لعدد من الدراسات والتقارير والملفات العسكرية وغير العسكرية - تناولت من جوانب مختلفة قضية الجنوب. وتفترض القراءة أن ما جرى في توريت خلال آب (أغسطس) عام 1955 لم يكن البداية، وإنما كان الذروة. فتحدد الدراسة من خلال السرد التاريخي، الوقائع التي قادت إلى انهيار الاتصال. فهي تقوم باستعراض وتحليل علاقات الشمال والجنوب، وتحدد الأدوار المختلفة التي لعبها الوطنيون والأجانب على حد سواء في تطور الصراع وانهيار الاتصال بين الشمال والجنوب. ولا تتوقف الدراسة عند مجرد الوصف لأحداث توريت 1955، بل تحلل تلك الأحداث استناداً إلى عدة وثائق تتصل بتلك الفترة من تاريخ البلاد. ثم تتناول الدراسة التطورات اللاحقة من الحكم العسكري في تشرين الثاني (نوفمبر) 1958 وفترات الحكم الديموقراطي الثانية، ثم فترة حكم مايو وإبرام اتفاقية أدريس أبابا في عام 1972، ثم ما تلا أيار (مايو) من انتفاضة وحكم ديمقراطي ثالث ونهاية بعهد الإنقاذ وتصاعد الصراع ثم انحساره حتى محادثات نايفاشا الممتدة من عام 2003 حتى 2004.
