كان شيل رايشمان في سن الثامنة والعشرين حين أُبْعِدَ إلى معسكر تريبلينكا في تشرين الأول 1942. وقد تم فصله عن رفاقه، عند الوصول من القطار، وأفْلتَ من غرف الغاز من خلال مزاولته لعدة أعمال، من مُنتَق للملابس إلى حلاّق إلى حامل للجثث أو "طبيب أسنان". في يوم 2 أغسطس 1943 شارك في تمرد المعسكر واستطاع الهرب. بعد أسابيع عديدة من التيه، اختبأ رايشمان لدى صديق بالقرب من فارسوفيا. لم تكن الحرب قد انتهت بعدُ. وهو يحكي، في دفتر، عشرة أشهر قضاها في الجحيم. عند التحرير، كان من بين 57 ناجٍ من بين 750 ألف يهودي أُرسلوا إلى معسكر تريبلينكا، كي تتم تصفيتهم باستخدام الغاز. ولم يصل أي معسكر آخر إلى ما وصل إليه معسكر تريبلينكا في عقلانية الإبادة الجماعية. هذا النص، الذي يُنشر لأول مرة، فريدٌ من نوعه. وقد كًتِب في حالة استعجالية، قبل الانتصار على النازيين، وهو يندرج ضمن الكتب الكبرى في هذا الموضوع. تزوج شيل رايشمان، بعد الحرب، مع ليلا، التي منحته ثلاثة أبناء. غادر بولونيا في نهاية سنة 1946 إلى الأوروغواي. وقد قدم شهادات عديدة لدى محاكمات قدماء S.S. وقد احتفظ، طول حياته، بهذا النصّ معه وكان يعود إليه كل مرة يحسّ فيها بوهن ذاكرته. وقد توفي سنة 2004 في مونتفيديو، وهو يطلب من عائلته نشر هذا النص.
