آخر غزاة القرن الرابع عشر وأعتاهم، قائدٌ تتري سار على خطى الإسكندر الكبير وجنكيز خان لكنه فاقهما فتكاً وتدميراً؛ إنه تيمورلنك قاهر الملوك والسلاطين وهادم الإمبراطوريات، أشعر حروباً في آسيا، فدمّر المدن وأحرق القرى ودبّ الذعر في قلوب الآمنين، وبنى أهراماً من الجماجم على أبواب المدن والدساكر التي فتحها. دانت له البلاد وخضعت له العباد من دلهي إلى دمشق، ومن بحيرة آرال إلى العراق، حتى خَشِيَه الناس في آسيا وأفريقيا وأوروبا. ورغم المكانة التي تبوّأها تيمورلنك في التاريخ، فإن تفاصيل حياته، التي شهدت سفك الدماء وإرتكاب المجازر، لا تزال غير معروفة للكثير من الناس، ولإقتفاء أثر قصصه، يسافر جاستن مرّوذي في بلدان آسيا الوسطى متنقَّلاً من مدينة إلى أخرى بحثاً عن أخبار هذا القائد الغامض، مؤسِّس الإمبراطورية التيموريَّة (1370- 1405م)، وسعياً للكشف عن الإرث الواسع الذي خلَّفه واستمرّ حتى العام 1506م. يُضيء هذا الكتاب أيضاً على مدينة سمرقند، العاصمة العظيمة لتيمورلنك، ويتناول بسالة هذا المحارب المحنّك الذي تطلّع في يوم ما إلى حكم العالم ونيل المجد، حال جميع الفاتحين الغُزاة، القُدامى والمعاصرين.
