هذا كتاب ليس كسائر الكتب الحربية التاريخية، لأن المؤلف هنا ليس واحداً أو اثنين من كتّاب التاريخ، بل هم سبعة مؤلفين من رتبة جنرال كانوا كلهم في الخدمة العسكرية العملية الألمانية إبان الحرب العالمية الثانية، حتى قيل في هذا الكتاب إنه ليس هناك كتاب عسكري آخر يضاهيه في محتوياته ومعالجة مواضيعه؛ إن مضمون هذا الكتاب نقد موثوق للفشل الذي أحاق بأجرأ عمل عدواني عرفه التاريخ. إن هؤلاء العسكريين السبعة الذي ألفوا كتاب "القراءات المهلكة" وضعوا كل معلوماتهم وخبراتهم في ما كتبوه، وإن الشيء القيّم في أي كتاب يعتمد بالدرجة الأولى على ما يبحث عنه المرء، وأن الطبيعة الغريبة للعلاقات البشرية ضمن صرح القيادة النازية، والتي يكشف عنها هذا الكتاب بوضوح لاول مرة، هي أشد وقعاً وأبعد سحراً من التحليل خطوة خطوة لتلك القرارات المهلكة التي أدت إلى القضاء على الهتلرية، حيث النهاية المُرّة كانت أمراً محتوماً لا محيد عنه.
