حين كان في الخمسين من عمره، وفي معرض تحدثه عن الحصيلة المؤقتة لوجوده، كان بوسع سان-سيمون أن يقدم للفيلسوف الاجتماعي هاتين القاعدتين العمليتين: "يجب على المرء أن يعيش الحياة الأكثر أصالة والأكثر نشاطاً... وينبغي عليه يجول بين كل طبقات المجتمع، وأن يضع نفسه شخصياً في كافة المواقع الاجتماعية الأكثر اختلافاً، بل وينبغي عليه، أيضاً أن يخلق علاقات لم يكن لها أي وجود على الإطلاق"، والحال أن حياة سان-سيمون، لا تبدو إلا وكأنها تعاقب لتجارب متناقضة بشكل عنيف، ومنطلقة من الأوساط الاجتماعية الأكثر تنوعاً. فحيناً كان سان-سيمون يمتلك ثروات هائلة، ثم بعد بضعة أشهر قصيرة كان سرعان ما يجد نفسه في وهدة الإفلاس، وأحياناً كان يجد نفسه، بشكل مؤقت، محاطاً بالأصدقاء والاتباع، لكنه سرعان ما يعود ليجد نفسه منبوذا من الجميع وجبراً على قبول أوخم الوظائف، أحياناً كان يتولى إدارة منشورات جماعية، بكل ما في ذاته من حماس متقد، لكنه في الوقت نفسه كان يبدو مشتتاً بحيث أنه يحاول الانتحار. أضف إلى هذا كله، أن هذه الحياة المتموجة، إنما وجدت إطاراً لها كل تلك المرحلة التاريخية الاستثنائية، كما أن مآسيها ساهمت في الصراعات التي حملت أسماء: ثورة عام 1789، الإمبراطورية، وعهد العودة. إذن ضمن هذه التجارب الحاسمة خاض سان-سيمون حياته الكثيفة، بحيث أن تلك المسيرة التاريخية شكلت مادة للتأمل الطموح الذي كان يكون رؤيويا لديه. وهذا الكتاب يتوقف عن سيرة هذا الكاتب في تحدث عن حياته، فلسفته، ومن ثم يقدم مجموعة الأعمال التي يكون نتاجه.
