استغرق العمل على هذه الموسوعة نحو عشرين سنة، وهي تتتبع السرود العربية منذ نشأتها الأولى، وتكشف المخاضن الدينية والشفوية التي انبثقت منها، وتقف بالتفصيل على أنواعها الكبرى القديمة منها والحديثة، تم تتقصى أبنيتها السردية والدلالية بداية من المرويات السردية الجاهلية وصولاً إلى الرواية العربية في العصر الحديث. وتتنزل هذه الموسوعة في صلب الدراسات السردية الحديثة، التي تجعل من السرد العربي مثار اهتمامها الرئيس، فتصدر عن رؤية نقدية تقرر أن السردية تعنى باستنباط النظم الداخلية للنصوص السردية، وتحدد خصائصها وسماتها، وتعنى بمظاهرها الأسلوبية والبنيوية والدلالية، وهي ليست نموذجاً جاهزاً يفرض على المادة السردية، إنما وسيلة للاستكشاف العميق المرتهن بقدرات الناقد، ومدى استجابة تلك المادة لوسائله الوصفية والتحليلية والتأويلية؛ فالتحليل النقدي مرتبط برؤية الناقد وأدواته وإمكاناته في استخلاص القيم الفنية للنصوص.
