إن روبين داريو وبابلو نيرودا هما دون شك، أكثر كاتبين تركا أثراً في الشعر الناطق بالإسبانية في هذا القرن. ولكن الشاعر التشيلي "نيرودا" فاق النيكاراغوي "داريو" فيما يتعلق بانتشار أعماله. ويمكننا التأكيد بأنه-منذ تزمنتيس-لم يحرز شاعر ناطق بالإسبانية شعبية تضاهي شعبية نيرودا. فترجماته تعد بالمئات-بدءاً من اللغات الأوروبية كلها، وانتهاء بلغات لا يمكن تصورها كالأوزبكية والأوردية، والبنغالية- وطبعات كتبه تعد بالآلاف، وعدد النسخ التي تحمل اسمه على غلافها في طول العالم وعرضه، تعد بعشرات الملايين. وقد تلقى في حياته جميع الجوائز وكل التكريم الذي يصبوا إليه كاتب، حتى وصل إلى جائزة نوبل منحت له عام 1971، وكان مرشحاً لها قبل ذلك بعشرين سنة-وكانت حياته محطاً لجوائز أخرى لا حصر لها، ولدرجات دكتوراه فخرية من عدة جامعات أميركية وأوروبية.. إضافة إلى العوامل غير الشعرية التي ساهمت في شعبية نيرودا المذهلة، ليس ثمة شك-لأن يؤس أعدائه فقط هو الذي يناقش أمراً كهذا- بأنه يجب البحث عن السبب الأول والأخير لشعبيته في طبيعة شعره حتماً. وتبقى مهمة هذا الكتاب-بعد مراجعة سريعة لشاعرية نيرودا ومآثره الشخصية-محاولة لتحليل تلك الطبيعة العميقة، والعناصر السياسية التي حركها الشاعر للوصول إلى هذه الطبيعة، والوصول في الوقت نفسه التي هذا الجمهور العالمي الواسع المتحمس.
