هناك أوجه عديدة يمكننا النظر من خلالها إلى دور النقود في الاقتصاد. وأن أحد الأوجه المهمة في التحليل النقدي الحديث العلاقة بين الدخل النقدي والمعروض النقدي، وهي العلاقة التي تُعرف بسرعة تداول النقود. إن هذه العلاقة بين الأرصدة النقدية والتدفق الإنفاقي (أو المدفوعات الكلية) يمكن تعريفها وقياسها بطرق متعددة، إلا أنّ كلاُّ من النظرية الاقتصادية والتجارب التطبيقية العملية توحيان بأن هذه العلاقة غير مستقرة عبر الزمن. إذ أن عرض النقد يمكن له أن يتغيّر بشكل كبير ومحسوس، في حين قد يبقى التدفُّق الإنفاقي أو حجم المدفوعات النقدية المرتبطة به دون أي تغيير، وقد يحصل العكس كذلك. إن التغيرات في سرعة التداول ذات أهمية كبيرة سواء تعلَّق الأمر بالتحليل النظري أم بصانعي القرار الاقتصادي. كما أن التغيرات في معدلات سرعة تداول النقود ذات أهمية قصوى في رسم السياسات اللازمة لبلوغ مستويات الدخل الملائمة والمطلوبة، شأنها في ذلك شأن التغيرات في النقود. ولغرض إدراك المضامين المختلفة لسرعة التداول وأهمية هذا المضمون عند رسم وتنفيذ السياسة النقدية جرى تقسيم الدراسة إلى خمسة محاولة وخاتمة وكما يلي: المحور الأول: التعارف المختلفة لسرعة التداول وطرق قياسها مع إشارة خاصة إلى المحددات الرئيسية التي تؤثر عليها. المحور الثاني: الجدل النظري حول سلوك سرعة التداول في المدارس الفكرية المختلفة. المحور الثالث: مدى استقرار دالة سرعة التداول. المحور الرابع: أهمية سرعة التداول في تنفيذ السياسة النقدية. المحور الخامس: طبيعة سرعة تداول النقود في البلدان النامية بما في ذلك سرعة تداول النقود في البلدان العربية.
