يتناول الكتاب "الليبرالية" لباسكال سالان موضوعاً في غاية الأهمية، ألا وهو موضوع الليبرالية بكل ما يلفها من غموض أنتجته مظاهر سوء الفهم للمرتكزات الحقيقة للفكر الليبرالي في البعد الإنساني الكبير، فالكتاب يساعد في تسليط الضوء، على جزء كبير من مناطق العتمة التي تسيء فهم الليبرالية وتحول دون الوصول إلى مدلولاتها الحقيقية. يرفض "باسكال سالان" الفكرة القائلة بأن الليبرالية إنما هي مجرد إيديولوجية مستوحاة من معتقدات شخصية وذاتية، وأنها بعيدة عن أن ترقى إلى مستوى المقاربة العلمية للإقتصاد والعلوم الإنسانية، ذلك أن النظريات التي تواجه الليبرالية هي بدورها إيديولوجيات بالضرورة، فالمشكل برأيه "لا يكمن في التوصيفة التحكمية التي تلصق برؤية معينة، ولمه يكمن في قيمة الأسس والمرتكزات التي تتأسس عليها هذه الرؤية. وهنا تجدر الإشارة إلى أن الليبرالية تبدو من هذه الزاوية أمراً "حقيقياً" باعتبار أنها تتأسس على تصور واقعي للإنسان وللعلاقات الاجتماعية (...)". وعلى هذا الأساس أي الأساس الواقعي في النظر نحو الطبيعة البشرية يقدم الليبراليون اقتراحاتهم التي يستعرض الكاتب بعضاً منها وذلك بتقديمه لنماذج وأمثلة توضح للقارئ السبل المثلى الكفيلة بضمان التدبير الجيد لمجتمع ليبرالي. تأتي أهمية هذا العمل من كونه يرصد بحرفية عالية نقاط التباعد التي أدت إلى اتساع رقعة الخلاف بين المقاربات المختلفة حول موضوع الليبرالية من خلال تقديمه لنظرية اجتماعية قاعدتها، ليست، على الإطلاق مادية، أو إجتماعية ولكنها فردانية فكرية وذاتوية هي تعبير عن رؤية خاصة تولدت لدى الكاتب نتيجة خبرة واسعة وتجربة ذاتية أراد مشاركة القارئ بها ليتجاوز كافة التابوهات الفكرية والسوسيولوجية وعلى التجرؤ على التفكير بكلمات غير تلك الكلمات مثل هذا "المجتمع البئيس" مجتمع "الفكر الأحادي" من خلال المدرسة والجامعة والإعلام والسياسة.
