وُلد لوكليزيو فى عام 1940 فى مدينة نيس الفرنسية، وهاجر والده الطبيب من إنجلترا إلى نيجيريا وأمضى سنواتٍ فى إفريقيا وهكذا عاش لوكليزيو جزءا من طفولته فى نيجيريا.
حصل على درجة الماجستير فى الأدب والفلسفة من جامعة أكس ابن بروفيتس وعمل بالتدريس فى جامعة بودبست بتايلاند عام 1966.
منذ عام 1973 قسّم إقامته بين فرنسا وأمريكا كما أمضى عدة سنوات فى بنما وكان لرحلاته كبير الأثر على مجمل أعماله الروائية التى غالبًا ما تتناول الصراع بين الثقافات المختلفة والجانب المظلم من سيطرة الغرب على العالم.
نشر أولى رواياته "المحضر" عام 1963 فحازت واحدة من أعرق الجوائز الأدبية الفرنسية "روندو" واكتسب بعدها شهرة واسعة.
من أشهر أعماله الروائية "الحمى" عام 1965.
"الطوفان" عام 1968.
"العمالقة" عام 1975.
"صحراء" عام 1980.
"الباحث عن الذهب" عام 1983.
"الإفريقى" عام 2004.
"متلازمة الجوع" عام 2008.
ترجمت أعماله إلى العديد من اللغات الأجنبية وحصد العديد من الجوائز الأدبية المهمة مثل جائزة الأكاديمية الفرنسية، وجائزة جان جيونو الكبرى وجائزة أمير موناكو.
قبل أن تتوج جوائزه جائزة نوبل لعام 2008.
