يعتبر محمد بن الحسن الشيباني مدون مذهب ابي حنيفة وهو صاحبه الثاني بعد ابي يوسف والفتوى في المذهب الحنفي بما في ظاهر الرواية اي في كتب ستة الجامع الكبير والجامع الصغير والسير الكبير والسير الصغير والمبسوط والزيادات، ومعنى الكبير هنا رواية محمد عن ابي حنيفة مباشرة، والصغير روايته عنه من طريق ابي يوسف. وقد رتب مسائله على ابواب الفقه ويبين بعد قول الامام قول ابي يوسف وقوله ان كان بينهم خلاف او موافقة احيانا. وقد طبع عن الطبعة التي حققها الشيخ ابو الوفاء الافغاني مع زيادة التعريف ببعض المصطلحات وضبط بعض الكلمات
