إن النباتات الخضراء قادرة على إنتاج المواد العضوية اعتمادا على ثنائي أوكسيد الكربون والضوء والأملاح المعدنية، أما الحيوانات فإنها لا تستطيع تركيب هذه المواد العضوية، بل تأخذها من النباتات بطريقة مباشرة (عاشبة) أو بطريقة غير مباشرة (لاحمة) لذلك تعتبر الحيوانات في نظر الفسيولوجي كائنات حية غير ذاتية التغذية (أما النباتات فهي ذاتية التغذية) وفي رأي الإكولوجي (عالم البيئة) فهي مستهلكة (والنباتات منتجة). إن الإنسان والحيوان في حاجة ماسة إلى الطعام لتغطية حاجيات جسمه بحكم فقدانه يوميا للماء والأملاح المعدنية والخلايا... إلا أن لكل حيوان طعاما معينا وم ثم له نظام غذائي محدد تبعا للجهاز الهضمي الذي يتوفر عليه، أضف إلى ذلك نوع وطبيعة العلاقة الغذائية القائمة بين الحيوانات.
