في هذا الكتاب يقدم لنا (ب. ج سلوت) حياة مؤسس الكويت الشيخ مبارك الصباح بتفصيل لم يسبق له مثيل من قبل، محللاً شخصيته، ومقدماً منجزاته السياسية، معتمداً على (الأرشيفات) البريطانية والفرنسية والألمانية، وكذلك الأرشيف العثماني والروسي والكويتي والهندي. بالإضافة إلى التغطيات الصحفية المعاصرة لعهده في كل من بريطانيا وأوربا والهند. لقد تعامل الشيخ مبارك مع القوى المممتنافسة على منطقة الخليج، ولا سيما الكويت نظراً لموقعها الاستراتيجي بذكاء ومهارة حفظت للكويت استقلالها في ظل الحماية البريطانية بمقتضى معاهدة 1899م. هذه التي لم يتم الاعلان عنها إلا بعد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الأولى حيث أصبحت الكويت تحكم حكماً ذاتياً داخل المنظومة البريطانية، دون أن يكون للنفوذ البريطاني سلطان عليها. وذلك في إطار القانون الدولي الذي حفظ للكويت سيادتها واستقلالها، ويؤكد (سلوت) أنه إلى جانب ذلك، وضع أساس النظام الدولي في الكويت لتصبح في عصره إمارة ذات كيان متميز. والكتاب ( في الطبعة العربية هذه) يعد مرجعاَ شاملاً ووافياً بكل وقائع تاريخ الكويت والمنطقة في فترة حكمة 1896-1915م.
