نبذة النيل والفرات: حظيت فرق الشيعة بنصيب وافر من الدراسات التي تناولت عقائدها. الدكتور أحمد محمود صبحي يبحث في هذا الكتاب أبرز عقائد الشيعة وهي الإمامة باحثاً عن الأسباب التي تقف وراء اعتقاد الشيعة بأحقية علي بالخلافة واعتبار ذلك أصلاً من أصول الاعتقاد. وقد تقيد المؤلف بمنهج واحد في هذه الدراسة يقوم على التماس مذهب الشيعة من أمهات كتبهم مع مقارنته بالآراء الأخرى المعارضة. لذا فقد حرص على أن يعرض انتقادات أهل السنة مما أضفى على الموضوع حرارة كما بين نواحي التأثر والتأثير بين مختلف فرق المسلمين في النواحي التي تماثلت منها آراؤهم. كما بين أيضاً تغلغل بعض أراء الشيعة لدى المذاهب الأخرى كالمعتزلة والصوفية والفلاسفة المسلمين وأثرها أيضاً في نشوء مذاهب أخرى كالبابية والبهائية. وتجنباً للانحياز المسبق فقد استعان على ذلك بالنظر إلى الشيعة باعتبارهم حزباً لا فرقة لكنه تجنب إصدار الأحكام المتسرعة التي قد تزيد الأمور تعقيداً. وغاية الأمر أن الدكتور أحمد محمود صبحي يقدم في هذه الدراسة بحثاً فلسفياً لا عقائدياً مما يزيد الموضوع صعوبة. وقد جاء الكتاب في خمسة أبوب فصل القول فيها في موضوع الإمامة، تناول الباب الأول نظرية الإمامة لدى الشيعة والسياسة الدينية عند المسلمين وبداية التشيع. أما الباب الثاني فقد بحث فيه مفهوم الإمامة عند الشيعة الإثني عشرية ووجوب الإمامة عند الله ووجوب عصمة الإمامة وعلمه. وفي الباب الثالث تناول بالدرس شخصية الإمام علي أما بقية الأئمة الإثني عشر فقد كرس لهم الباب الرابع كما تطرق إلى نشوء البابية والبهائية. أما الباب الخامس فقد عقد فيه مقارنة بين فكرة الإمامة لدى الشيعة والمذاهب الأخرى كما عرض لفكرة الإمامة بين التشيع والفلسفة الإسلامية.
