يقول موريس فلامان في مقدمة كتاب "الليبرالية المعاصرة"، الحرية هي أيضاً ليبرالية: لهذا السبب غالباً ما يكون تفجرها غير منظور. فهي تنشأ دائماً في الأوقات التي تبدو فيها مزدرية ومنسية. هذا هو الحال بالنسبة لمصدر قوة الليبرالية في عصرنا هذا. لكن ما هو صحيح أن الوقائع توضح هذا الأمر. تنشأ داخل اقتصادنا صعوبات جمّة منذ بداية الثلث الثالث من عصرنا هذا. ومن هذه الصعوبات المتعددة: للاضطراب النقدي الدولي المعرّف بالتلميح "بالصرف الدائم" حيث التقلبات في أسعار الصرف، وبشكل خاص أسعار صرف الدولار، تشير إلى المدى الذي يمكن أن يصله عدم التطابق والتوافق بحيث تستحيل مقاومته بشكل عنيف "ضمن هذه المقاربة يأتي البحث في هذا الكتاب الذي يلقي موريس فلامان الضوء على إيجابيات وسلبيات الليبرالية المعاصرة متوقفاً عند وجهة نظر تسمح بالتحقق بمختلف النقاط القوية حيث ينطبع الانعكاس الليبرالي في العالم الحالي. وبالتالي فالخطوط التي يحاول فلامان التوقف عندها واستجلاء مواقفها هي: الدور المتنازع به للدولة، علاقات المشاريع والسوق، وظيفة النقود بالنسبة للصالح العام، حل النزاعات والمسائل المتعلقة بالبلاغات. تشكل هذه المحاور التي تمثل تساؤلات، موضوع الفصول الخمسةـ التي ستحاول أن تستحصل على بعض الأجوبة لمسائل معقدة جداً تطال الليبرالية المعاصرة.
