للأنساب عند العرب أهمية لِمَا يعنيه لهم ذلك من فخار تحدثت به أدبياتهم بكثير من الثناء والمديح من خلال تمجيدهم الأصول والتباهي بها كموروث جيني يحمله الخلف عن السلف. وكذلك توارث الأطباع بحيث إنهم كانوا يقيّمون الوافد إليهم وكشف أطباعه وخُلقه من خلال انتسابه لقبيلة أو عشيرة بعينها. وبعد ظهور الإسلام كان لخصال النبي (ص) دور هام في التفاف الناس من حوله وتصديقه بما يبشّر به من خلال خصال كان يوصف بها قبل إعلان الرسالة، فكان يوصف بالصادق الأمين، إضافة إلى نسبه من الأصلاب والأرحام. وبعد تبليغه الرسالة كان لهذه المسألة دور هام بحيث كثر التساؤل حول "إيمان آباء الرسول(ص) واتخذ أبعاداً عقائدية مهمة، لذا زخرت المكتبة الإسلامية بالجدل العلمي العميق الذي ينفي تارة، ويثبت تارة أخرى نزوعاً لعقيدة معينة، وتطرفاً لمذهب آخر". كذلك بعد وفاة النبي (ص) ادّعى كثيرون ممن تعاقبوا وتداولوا الحكم من المتأخرين، انتسابهم إلى الرسول الكريم(ص) تفاخراً. في هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف جملة من الأحاديث حول هذا الموضوع، ثم ينتقل إلى إثبات ما يحتاج الجدال إلى إثباته في مسألة إيمان آباء النبي(ص).
