بنى العرب القدماء (الكنعانيون) مدينة القدس، قبل أكثر من خمسة آلاف عام من الآن، وأطلقوا عليها اسم " يبوس" نسبة إلى قبيلة اليبوسيين التي بنتها ثم غيّروا اسمها إلى "سالم" إله السلام، الذي كانوا يعتقدونه آنذاك، وكان عرب العراق القدماء يطلقون اسم " اور " على الحواضر الكبرى، فشاع عن طريقهم استعمال اسمها (أورسالم) الذي اشتهرت به فيما بعد، وتم تحويره عبر اللهجات واللغات المتعاقبة إلى اورشاليم، أو يروشالايم، أو جيروزيليم بالانجليزية.
