كتب عنها الناقد صلاح السروي: "الروايات التي تعاملت مع التاريخ جاءت على ثلاثة وجوه، الاول منها هو القناع، والثاني هو مساءلة التاريخ ومعرفة اسباب ما يمكن ان نسميه بالامراض الاجتماعية المستوطنة كالدكتاتورية وعبادة الحاكم والخنوع والصبر على الضيم، اما الوجه الثالث فهو الرمز، وذهب الى ان نهر السماء واحدة من روايات الوجه الثاني، اذ انها تبحث وتفتش لا في التاريخ ووثائقه كما يبدو لنا، ولكن في اسباب ما نحن عليه الآن، ومن ثم فهي ترى التاريخ متصلا منفصلا في نفس الآن، وقد استفاد الكاتب في عمله من لحظة تاريخية وصفها مؤرخون كبار امثال ابن اياس والجبرتي، حيث مصطفى اغا الذي يريد ان يبني قلعة، معتمدا على مهندس لا يعرف في البناء، ومن ثم فان اخطاءه تقع على عاتق الفلاحين الذين يقومون بالبناء عشرات المرات، وتجبى من محاصيلهم الضرائب اللازمة لذلك، وجاءت شخصية الشيخ السنهوري الفاسدة الجاهزة بفتاواها لتبرير اخطاء الاغا، هذا التعاضد ما بين السلطتين الدينية والسياسية كان اساس الويلات التي شهدها الفلاحون، وكان الممهد الاول لطريق الفرنسيين بمجيئهم الى مصر، وكان الكاتب يصرخ فينا انتبهوا فما حدث يمكنه ان يحدث الآن.
