الجنون هو اللغز المركزي في النفسية البشرية. خلقت أدمغتنا لتعطينا فهماً صادقاً عن الحقيقة، ولتسمح لنا بالاندماج في مجتمعاتنا، ولتساعدنا على أقلمة سلوكنا مع بيئتنا. وفي حالة المرض العقلي الشديد، يقوم الدماغ تماماً بعكس هذه الأشياء. يبني المعاني قلاعاً من التوهمات التخيلية، ويفشل في التأقلم، ويصبح غريباً ضمن سربه. مع ذلك فإن المرض العقلي ليس بظاهرة هامشية: فهو يوجد في جميع المجتمعات وفي جميع العصور التاريخية، وإن الجينات التي تكمن وراءه شائعة جداً. إذ توجد الخلايا التي تحدد الجنون بشكل مضعَّف في التفكير والإحساس السليمين. إن استمرار الجنون إذاً هو أحجية مريعة من وجهة نظر تخلقية ووجهة نظر إنسانية.
