تعمل "نينا" عارضة أزياء في وكالة تصوير شهيرة، وتفاجأ في يوم بخطاب إنهاء خدمتها نظراً لبلوغها سن الخامسة والعشرين وهي أقصى سن تعمل فيها العارضة؛ أصيبت بإحباط شديد، وذهبت لمقابلة صديقتها في المكتبة العامة لتشكو لها همومها، وأثناء انتظارها لصديقتها يتقدم منها شاب يحاول التعرف عليها، وتبين-فيما بعد-أنه مهندس مناجم، وأنه يبحث عن ممول لمشروع اكتشافه منجم ذهب، تعرض عليه "نينا" أن تساعده في تمويل المشروع عن طريق أسرتها التي هي من أغنياء "شيكاغو". تضع الأسرة شروطاً قاسية للتمويل كجزء من رأس المال، وعليه هو تدبير الباقي على أن تتولى إدارة المشروع ممثلة في "نينا"، كانت "نينا" قد وقعت في حبه بشدة، وتنازلت عن حياة الرفاهية في المدينة لتتبعه في الصحراء والغابات؛ لتعاونه في بحثه، واستغلال المنجم. ويواجهان مشاكل رهيبة من الأسرة، ومن الممولين، ومن الهنود الحمر الذي يقع جزء من المنجم في أراضيهم.
