كانت الليلة مثالية لارتكاب جريمة سرقة عن طريق نقب الجدار، كانت الثلوج تهبط بغزارة، الأمر الذي سيساعد على إخفاء آثار الأقدام... كان المرء لا يستطيع رؤية أطراف أصابعه لو مد يده أمام وجهه، كانت قيادة السيارات على الطرق محفوفة بالمخاطر والموت. ولا بد أن رجال الشرطة سيكون لديهم ما يشغلهم ما بين الاصطدام بين السيارات وبين السباق بينهما، ولكن يكون عندهم –بالتأكيد- الوقت للتفكير في "جيمي فالانتاين" الشهير بلص المجوهرات الذي لا يبارى. فوق ذلك فهذه ليلة "عيد الكريسماس" ويسوء الجو عاطفة بهجة وشعور بالعيد والرخاء ولا يمكن أن يحدث شيء سلبي في هذه الليلة، كانت أدوات السرقة مرتبة في حقيبة صغيرة جلدية: معاول صغيرة لامعة من مختلف الأحجام وإزميل وكشاف بطارية صغيرة ولكنه قوي.. كل ما يحتاجه لص يخدم نفسه من أجل ليلة موفقة في المدنية. وفي تمام الحادية عشرة والنصف ليلاً ارتدى معطفه الجلدي الأسود الذي لا غنى عنه في عمله، وأكمله بقفاز من جلد الماعز وأنهى استعداده بكأس من المشروب المقوي في صحة ليلة موفقة. لقد كانت ليلة مثالية للاقتحام... للسرقة...
