"ستكون صدمة الولايات المتحدة عند عدم تفردها بالعالم واستئثارها به عميقة. لن تعود النزعة الكلية الغربية شمولية بأى معنى مع صعود الصين- وسيتقلص باطراد تأثير قيمة ووجهات نظره. أى أن ظهور الصين كقوة كوكبية سيعمل واقعيا على إضفاء الصبغة النسبية على كل شئ. لقد تعود الغرب على فكرة ان العالم هو عامله، والمجتمع الدولى مجتمعه، والمؤسسات الدولية مؤسساته، والعملة العالمية -الدولار- عملته، واللغة العالمية -الإنجليزية- لغته. ظل الافتراض البدهى هو أنه من الطبيعى أن يسبق لفظ "غربى" كنعت (صفة) كل اسم مهم. لكن هذا لن يستمر سيكتشف الغرب باطراد أن العالم لم يعد غربياً، هذا علاوة على أنه سيجد نفسه، فى نفس الوضع الذى كانت عليه بقية دول العالم فى عهد هيمنة الغرب، أى أنها كان عليها أن تتعلم من الغرب وتعيش بشروطه وتتبنى منطلقاته. ولأول مرة، سيكون على الغرب وهو فى سبيله إلى الاضمحلال أن يتفاعل مع الثقافات والبلدان الأخرى ويتعلم من مواطن قوتها. تلج الولايات المتحدة الآن فترة مستطالة من الصدمة الاقتصادية والسياسية والعسكرية. تجد نفسها على شفا أزمة نفسية، وعاطفية، ووجودية. ليس من المحتمل أن يكون رد فعلها على المدى المتوسط محبباً وليس أمام العالم سوى التمنى بألا تكشف عن وجه قبيح".
