القتّال الكلابي هو عبيد الله أو عبيد بن مجيب بن المضرحي وكان يكنّى بأبي الحسيب وأبي سليل ولعل الصواب "شليل" وهي كنية جدّه المضرحي. أما لفظ "القتّال" فإنه لقب غلب عليه لتمرده وفتكه. وهو شاعر إسلامي كان في الدولة المروانية في عصر الراعي والفرزدق وجرير. ويمثل القتّال الكلابي حالة متطرفة لمقاومة كل ما سنته الدولة من تنظيمات كما يمثل الثورة على الاستقرار ويمعن في حماية نقاء الدم بين أفراد القبيلة. وقد مثل شعره الذي حمله هذا الديوان من حيث الموضوع أنواع الصراع الذي كانت تشهده البادية في عصره. فمن قصائده ما هو صورة للمنازعات القبلية، وبخاصة بين بني جعفر وأبناء عمومتهم بني أبي بكر، ومنها ما هو صورة للصراع بين القتّال وقبيلته إذ كانت تتخلى عنه لكثرة جرائمه حتى ليتمنى أحياناً أنه لم يكن منتسباً إليها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فقد صور شعره الصراع بين الدم النقي والدم الدخيل، ولذلك كثر حديثه عن كراهية الدماء، وكثر اعتزازه بأنه من نسل الحرائر. والمثل الأعلى في الشخصية لديه هو "الصعلوك". أما غزله فتتردد فيه أسماء نساء كثيرات، ولكنه في شرح مواجده وتصويره الأسى يشبه العذريين حتى اختلطت بعض أبياته بأشعار بعضهم. وقد كان الحبّ في شعره تعبيراً عن القلق الذي يهزه نحو الاستقرار ونحو المكان أو الموطن الذي يحبه، ولذلك كثرت أسماء الأماكن فيشعره وهي منازل بني قومه العامريين، وكثيراً ما ينفلت الحزن في أشعاره تعبيراً عن حاجته العميقة إلى أن يكون إنسان طبيعياً يجد القلوب التي تحبّه وتقبل عليه.
