لقد نفذت بحوث كثيرة في العلوم الاجتماعية منذ ثمانينيات القرن العشرين، زادت معرفتنا بالمجتمع اليمني، ومع ذلك تدعو الضرورة أن نقدم لجمهور واسع مؤلفاً واحداً مستخلصاً من تلك البحوث عن اليمن المعاصر الذي توحد في 22 مايو سنة 1990. ويهدف هذا المؤلف إلى تقديم الخطوط الرئيسة عن قوى التغيير الاجتماعي والسياسي والاقتصادي في ذلك البلد، آخذاً في الحسبان عراقة اليمن في شبه الجزيرة العربية. وهذا هو سبب تنفيذ برنامج بحث فرنسي ألماني مفتوح لجنسيات أخرى، وبخاصة للباحثين اليمنيين، واشتركت في هذا البرنامج مؤسسات ثلاث: المركز الفرنسي للدراسات اليمنية في صنعاء، والمركز الفرنسي الألماني للبحوث في برلين (مركز مارك بلوخ)، والمركز الألماني للدراسات الشرقية في هامبورج.
