إن التطرق إلى مشكلة الاكتئاب خطوة مدهشة للغاية، لأن "الاكتئاب" مرض شائع في وقتنا الحاضر، وتشعبت أسبابه ووسائل علاجه. سنتناول في هذا الكتيب بعضاً من الموضوعات المختلفة التي يخشى التطرق إليها، أو بعض المواقف التي يفضل المرء إخفاءها. إذا أردنا حل مشكلة الضيق-التي قد تستمر أياماً كثيرة وقد تؤدي إلى سلوك مغالي فيه في أكثر الحالات خطورة-فإنه ينبغي الاعتراف قبل أي شيء بأن الاكتئاب مرض مقنن والذي يتيح بهذا الشكل وقاية وعلاجاً بوسائل علاجية مناسبة. من الخطأ الجسيم أن نظن أنه يهدأ من تلقاء نفسه ويعالج بأسلوب المواساة مثلاً، ولكنك تمتلك كل شيء حتى تكون سعيداً... يرتبط الاكتئاب بانعدام الوسطاء العصبيين بالمخ وبالتالي يعالج على أنه مرض عضوي. إنه مرض يتطلب عناية فائقة من جانب الطبيب مثلما هو كذلك بالنسبة للمريض. إذا كنت تعاني التهابات بالشعب الهوائية فإنك ستسعين بالمضاد الحيوي وتنتظر شفاءه لكن الحال يختلف مع الاكتئاب: لا بد من التصرف على المستويين: المخي والذهني. المخ والحالة النفسية والأدوية والكلام. لم يعد العلاج في الحقيقة متشابهاً في كل الحالات لكنه يحدد على حسب الحالة الشخصية للمريض مع الاستعانة بالعلاج بالأدوية إلى جانب التحليل النفسي. أصبح من الممكن اليوم تشخيص كافة الاضطرابات بوسائل متعددة وجيدة. لم يعد الاكتئاب اليوم نفقاً بلا مخرج أو النفق المظلم.
