لأبوليوس في التاريخ القرطاجي العريق مكانة مرموقة، بلغها لمّا أبدع رواية «المسوخ »، أو «الحمار الذهبيّ »، إذ لأوّل مرّة في تاريخ الأدب اللاتيني تبرز رواية نثريّة تلاقي نجاحا شبيها بنجاح ورواج الروايات النثريّة الإغريقيّة. لكنّ مكانة أبوليوس تعود أيضا لتعدّد جوانب شخصيّته الأدبيّة : فهو المثقّف ثقافة متينة مزدوجة لاتينيّة وإغريقيّة معا. وبفضل ما اقتبسه أو ترجمه من الكتب الإغريقية، اطّلع عديد المثقّفين، ومن بينهم القدّيس أوغسطينوس، في موفَّى القرن الرابع، على خبايا ونفائس الفكر الإغريقي وعلى الفلسفة الأفلاطونية. وأبوليوس هو أيضا الخطيب البليغ والمحاضر البارع، وهو المتديّن المتصوّف والطبيب الذي تعاطى السحر، وهو المؤرّخ الّذي يُعدّ خير مثال لما بلغته نخبة المثقّفين الأفارقة من انسجام وتجاوب مع ثقافة الإمبراطوريّة الرومانية وحضارتها خلال القرن الثاني بعد الميلاد، حتى غدا رمزا ومثالا للمثقّف الروماني الإفريقي في ذلك العصر. واقتُطفت هذه النصوص من كتاب «المسوخ » الثريّ بالمغامرات والمفاجآت، ومن كتابَيْ «فلوريدا » و «أبولوجيا » )مثل المحاضرة التي ألقاها أبوليوس بمسرح قرطاج وحديثه عن فترة الاستشفاء بالمياه الفارسية، أي حمّام الأنف( وأخيرا من كتاب «دي ديو سوقراطيس » الذي يتضمّن تأمّلاته الصوفيّة.
