نبذة النيل والفرات: أدب الأسفار والرحلات من أمتع فصول الأدب وأكثر مؤلفاته رواجاً وأحسنها قبولاً لدى القراء. فقد يحجم المرء عن مطالعة كتاب علمي أو قراءة مؤلف تأريخي ولكن هذه الأحجام ينقلب لديه إلى إقبال إذا كان ما يقرؤه مشاهدات دونت في رحلة أو أنباء سجلت في سفر. ولقد اعتاد الغربيون منذ القرون الوسطى الاهتمام بهذا اللون من التأليف فأبدعوا فيه وأكثروا من إبرازه حتى أصبح الكثيرون منهم يبذلون الاهتمام الكبير في تدوين رحلاتهم وأسفارهم وأن لم يكونوا من حملة الحكم وأصحاب البيان هذا ولا يمكن إنكار ما كان للعرب عموماً والمسلمين خصوصاً أيضاً في هذا المجال، حيث كان لهم أدب للرحلات متميز. وهذا الكتاب يعكس أدب الرحلات الغربي إذ انه يضم جزءاً مستلاً من رحلة قام بها أحد موظفي "شركة الهند الشرقية"، وهي الشركة الإنكليزية التي مهدت لبريطانيا احتلال الهند والطريق المؤدي إليها مدة قرنين كاملين، من الهند عائداً إلى موطنه بريطانيا عن طريق العراق وتركيا فأوروبا. ومع أن مشاهدات هذا الرحالة "جاكسون" لم تحو الكثير من الأحداث البارزة التي مر بها العراق في تلك الفترة كما أنه لم يكن له إسهاب في وصف الأماكن التي اجتازها ووقع في كثير من الأخطاء، مع ذلك فإن ما دوّنه عن العراق في أواخر القرن الثامن عشر يؤلف حلقة هامة من حلقات تأريخه التي لم يتقدم أحد من المؤرخين أو الباحثين على تدوينها بروح علمية صادقة. إن مجرد اطلاع القارئ على ما كان عليه العراق حين اجتازه الرحالة جاكسون وما هو عليه اليوم يكفي وحده لإبراز التقدم الهائل الذي أصابه هذا البلد الذي ما كان يستطيع أن يظل بمعزل عن التيارات العالمية أو يبقى بمنجاة من فعل الظروف وتطور الأحداث.
