نبذة النيل والفرات: هذا الكتاب فريد من نوعه، ذلك أنه ما سبق قبل اليوم لسيدة إنكليزية، وإن كانت مسلمة، أن تمكنت من الدخول إلى مكة المكرمة، والمدينة المنورة، وأداء شعائر الإحرام والحج..، كما لم يسبق أن عبّرت إحداهن على ما يعتمل في صدرها من إيمان "بالله ربّا"، ومن عواطف وإخلاص "للإسلام دينا". إطمأنت إلى أنها وجدت طريقها في الحياة، و"أنها قريبة من الله أبدا"، بل إنه "أقرب من أنفاسها إليها". "سألني كثيرون كيف ومتى أسلمت؟"، تقول المؤلفة، وتجيب: "يصعب عليّ تعيين الوقت"، "ويغلب عليّ ظني أنني مسلمة منذ نشأتي الأولى". الكتاب عبارة عن مذكرات يومية كتبتها المؤلفة خلال رحلة الحج التي قامت بها إلى الأماكن المقدسة الإسلامية، بعد أن أشهرت إسلامها، فالحج "يقرّب الناس إلى الله جلّ جلاله، ويزيد في نور هذه الشعلة الإلهية التي أنارت العالم كله"، وهو بالنسبة لها "ليس فرضاً دينياً فحسب، وانما هو إلى ذلك كله جمعية أمم عظمى ومجامع مختلفة في الفن والأدب والتجارة والسياسة وغير ذلك من ألوان الحياة". بالإضافة إلى التعبير عن عواطفها ومكنونات نفسها تجاه إيمانها بالله والدين الإسلامي، يتضمن الكتاب "بعض الواجبات التي يصار إلى القيام بها في الحج كما وتصف تفاصيل رحلتها منذ انطلاقها بالقطار من القاهرة إلى بور سعيد حيث تسرد ما حصل معها خلال سفرها على متن الباخرة إلى جدة التي تصفها وصفاً دقيقاً، ومن ثم إلى المدينة المنورة التي تفرد لها أكثر من فصل سردي متلازم مع تدوين تعليقاتها وإحاسيسها واستنتاجاتها، وكانت قد أخذت ترى "في الحياة العربية جمالاً وروعة شديدين"، وفي لباسها العربي "طرافة عظيمة"، كما تدوّن كل ما يتعلق بزياراتها للمساجد وللأماكن المقدسة ولزيارة "القبر الشريف"، التي أحدثت فيها "من تأثير وروعة واضطراب عاطفة" تملأ النفس "ذهولا ورجاء وخوفاً وأملاً، ذلك أنها أمام نبيّ مرسل، لم تلد مثله البطون حتى اليوم." كتاب شيق مميز وفريد يعكس مضمونه ومحتواه، لتجربة دينية قامت بها امرأة انكليزية مميزة، اختارت الدين الإسلامي دينا لها، فدخل قلبها ووجدانها، فاتمت فرض الحج قائلة "إن الزمن لن يمحو من ذهني وذاكرتي المشاهد التي لا أزال أحتفظ بها في قلبي، والتي رأيتها في مكة والمدينة.."
