عبد الأحد السبتي (مواليد فاس سنة 1948)، هو أستاذ باحث في التاريخ ومؤرخ مغربي، يعمل بكلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية بالرباط. عمل في السابق أستاذا للاجتماعيات بثانوية عبد المالك السعدي بالقنيطرة. وقد حصل على دكتوراه السلك الثالث بجامعة باريس 7، ودكتوراه الدولة بجامعة محمد الخامس - أكدال.

يمثل الكتاب في آن واحد محاولة تركيبية في مجال تاريخ المدينة المغربية. والملاحظ أنه رغم ألفة الحديث عن أهمية الظاهرة الحضرية في تاريخ المغرب، نلاحظ غياب التأليف التركيبي حول المدينة المغربية، بل وحتى ندرة الدراسات المونوغرافية حول نفي الحقل. وبالتالي فالمجهود التركيبي لا ينطلق من وفرة دراسات حالات محددة كما هو الشأن في البلدان ذات التراكم الكبير في البحث التاريخي الجامعي لذلك اضطررنا إلى الجمع بين البحث والتركيب، وهذا ما يجعل عملنا منتوجا يلبي فضول عموم القراء، ويخاطب الباحثين المهتمين من خلال إثارة أسئلة ومسالك تستحق المزيد من الدراسة. ويتناول هذا الكتاب مرحلة العصر الحديث، وقد حاولنا في البداية إتباع نفس الخطاطة التي اتبعناها في الكتاب السابق، فلاحظنا صعوبة ذلك بسبب حجم التغيرات وطبعها الكيفي، لذلك اخترنا التركيز على جانب المستجدات ومستويات التحول الذي عرفته الظاهرة الحضرية في هذه المرحلة، والتركيز على إشكالية السلطة في العلاقة مع الدولة المخزنية. يبدو لنا، بالنسبة للعصر الحديث،أن هناك ثلاثة مستويات مختلفة تحدد مسألة السلطة في المدينة المغربية، وهي تجربة الاحتلال الابيري،ودور الزوايا، وعلاقة الدولة بالجهاز المخزني.
