ولد الشاعر والروائي بن أوكري في عام 1959 في مينّا بشمال نيجيريا، لأم تنحدر من منطقة اجبو بالجنوب الشرقي من نيجيريا، وأب من منطقة يورهوبو بالجنوب.
ونشأ في لندن قبل العودة إلى نيجيريا مع أسرته في عام 1968.
تناقش كثير من أعماله الأولى العنف السياسي الذي شهده بنفسه أثناء الحرب الأهلية في نيجيريا.
وغادر البلاد حينما حصل على منحة من الحكومة النيجيرية مكنته من قراءة الأدب المقارن بجامعة أسكس بإنجلترا.
عمل محررا للشعر بمجلة وست إفريقيا في الفترة من 1983 إلى 1986، كما عمل بهيئة الإذاعة البريطانية بصورة منتظمة في الفترة بين 1983 و 1985.
وعين عضوا بقسم الفنون الإبداعية بترينتي كولدج، كمبردج في عام 1991، واحتفظ بهذا الموقع حتى 1993.
وأصبح عضوا بالجمعية الملكية للأدب في عام 1987، ومنح الدكتوراة الفخرية من جامعتي وستمنستر (1997) و أسكس (2002).

يعد (بن أوكرى) واحداً من أهم الأصوات فى الأدب الأفريقى المعاصر المكتوب بالإنجليزية، وتتميز أعماله بالهجاء والنقد للأزمات الإقتصادية والسياسية المختلفة التى أصابت الدول الأفريقية بالبلاء منذ نهاية فترة الإستعمار.
تتميز لغة ( أوركى) -فى الغالب- بالبساطة والوضوح والشفافية، ولكنه فى هذه الرواية يضيف إلى ذلك خاصية شعرية، وتصويراً دقيقاً لعالم غارق فى الفساد السياسي والمكبل بالتقاليد العشائرية، ويقدم لنا مزيجاً من الأمل واليأس بأسلوب سحرى أخاذ.
