"صحوت بعد فترة طويلة، ربما تزيد على الساعة، كانت هي كل ما أصبت من نوم طيلة تلك الأيام الخمسة الطويلة. وانتظمت، بعد أن صحوت، في طابور عمل الدرجات، الذي ساده في ذلك اليوم صمت هادئ حزين، لم تتخلله إلا كلمات متناثرة، مثل سؤالي: أنتم عاملين إيه في العنبر؟ ثم الإجابة المتوقعة: الحالة سيئة، لم يتوقفوا عن ضربنا والتنكيل الفظيع بنا منذ أدخلوكم التأديب. (ففي نفس اليوم الذي أودعت فيه زنزانة التأديب الأولى في الصباح، أودعوا غرفتين أخريين كلاًّ من إسماعيل صبري، بعد العودة من الجبل، ثم عبد المنعم شتلة، الذي تقدم للاحتجاج على المعاملة، بعد أن مدده على قدميه حتى تورمتا، وألقوا صفيحة ماء على أرضية زنزانته). وظهر حسن منير في الأوردي قبل عودة طابور العمل في الجبل، وثارت ثائرته (وهو قليلاً ما يثور) في حين رآني أشتغل مع الدرجات في المغسل، ونهر الكتبي وسبه... وهدده وتوعده قائلاً: أنا قلت الولد ده ما يسيبش الزنزانة أبداً... أغلقت الزنزانة، وخَفَتَ وقع الأقدام. وسمعت صوت البوابة الخارجية للأوردي وهي تغلق. وتعلقت عيناي بقضبان شراعة الزنزانة التي تبدو منها سماء الغروب الصافية الشاحبة، وقد قسمتها القضبان القصيرة الغليظة... ساد صمت ثلجي متصل. يمزقه بوحشية كل ربع ساعة صيحات حراس الأبراج، الذين يتفننون، تنفيذاً للأوامر، في إزعاج المعتقلين... في الصمت الأسود ارتفع صوتي منادياً: إسماعيل... إسماعيل... اخترق الصوت شباك زنزانتي، ونفذ من الشباك المقابل لزنزانة إسماعيل. وردّ على النداء: أيوه يا سعد... إزاي حالك. إزي رجليك؟ حالتها فظيعة طبعاً... وأنت عامل إيه؟ إنت قاعد؟ طبعاً، هو أنا قادر أقف عليهم".
نزيل من نزلاء سجن الأوردي يدوّن مذكراته التي تكشف عن واقع أليم، وعن حياة داخله هي للموت أقرب. يمضي القارئ متتبعاً مذكرات ذاك السجين دون أن يغيب عن ذهنه بأن ما يقرأه ليس خيالاً وإنما هو واقع المعتقلين المأساوي ليس في سجن الأوردي بل في جميع السجون.
