صدر مرسوم إنشاء مجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة عام 1932 م، وابتدأ أعضاؤه جهادهم في خدمة لغة الضاد منذ عام 1943م، فلما كانت سنة 1984م احتفل المجمع بعيده الذهبي احتفالاً رائعاً تجد وصفه في أول هذا الكتاب تليه وقائع الدورة الخمسين وبعض ما سبقها من دورات. ويصف الدكتور ابراهيم مدكور رئيس المجمع مع صنعه المجمعيون خلال نصف قرن بقوله: إد درس المجمعيين جاد، وإن بحثهم عميق، واستقرت لديهم مبادئ لها شأنها، فهم يرون أن اللغة ظاهرة اجتماعية تسير بسير الزمن، وتتطور بتطور المجتمع، وهي ملك لأهلها، وفي وسعهم أن يغذوها بغذاء لا ينقطع. واستطاعوا أن ييسروا العربية في ألفاظها وتراكيبها، في كتابتها وإملائها. وبرهنوا على أنها في مرونتها واستقامتها ليست أقل كفاية من اللغات الحية الكبرى في مواجهة متطلبات العلم والحضارة، واجهت ذلك في الماضي البعيد ولا تزال أهلاً لمواجهته اليوم. وللمجمعيين في ذلك توصيات وقرارات تملأ صحفهم ومحاضر جلساتهم، ويضيفون إليها جديداً كل عام، ويقبل الباحثون والدارسون، ويفيدون منها ما استطاعوا. ولما كان الكثيرون يودون معرفة ما قرره مجمع اللغة العربية أو أوصى به خلال خمسين سنة فقد قام الدكتور عدنان الخطيب عضو المجمع بصنع مسرد كامل لمقررات المجمع ألحقه بما كان نشره من وقائع الدورات المجمعية التي كان من شهودها. مع الإشارة الى أهم البحوث والدراسات التي استند إليها في تلك المقررات ومكان نشرها. كل هذا تجده في هذا الكتاب الذي تقدمه دار الفكر بدمشق الى المهتمين بالفصحى والغياري عليها والمعنيين بالحفاظ على الضادر لغة علم وحضارة
